Before you enter Ireland, decide what you are actually building here.

The incorporation question is easy. The operating question is where the real work begins.

The Temptation of the Easy Path

When I meet founders considering Ireland as their European base, the conversation almost always begins the same way. "What's the fastest way to set up a company here?" "What are the tax benefits?" "How long does the registration take?"

These are valid questions, but they're the wrong starting point.

Incorporation in Ireland is straightforward. The real question—the one that separates companies that thrive from those that merely survive—is what you're actually building here.

Beyond the Legal Entity

A company registration number is not a strategy. A bank account is not a market presence. A VAT number is not a business model.

What I've observed across dozens of market entries is that founders who succeed in Ireland don't treat it as a checkbox exercise. They treat it as a commitment. They understand that Ireland is not just a jurisdiction—it's a community, a talent pool, and a gateway to Europe.

The founders who struggle are the ones who think they can incorporate and then figure things out later. They treat their Irish entity as a shell, not a substance.

The Questions That Actually Matter

Before you file that incorporation paperwork, ask yourself:

  • What problem are you solving for Irish customers? Not European customers. Not global customers. Irish customers specifically.
  • Who are you hiring here? And why would they choose to work for you over the dozens of other tech companies in Dublin?
  • What does success look like in 3 years? Not just revenue targets—but what kind of reputation do you want to have?
  • How much are you willing to invest in relationships? Because Ireland is a relationship-driven market.

The Operating Question

The incorporation question is easy. It's a form, a fee, and a few weeks of patience.

The operating question is where the real work begins. It's about showing up consistently, building trust, and being part of the ecosystem—not just extracting from it.

If you're entering Ireland to build a real business, welcome. If you're entering Ireland to check a box, you'll eventually discover that you've wasted your time and the time of everyone you've engaged with.

Ireland rewards those who commit. It's patient with those who take the time to understand it. But it has no patience for those who treat it as a convenient transaction.

So before you enter Ireland, decide what you're actually building here. Because the answer to that question will determine everything that follows.
